For Professionals
AMAMA Practice Lab
You trained as a doula. Now you are building a practice.
The practice behind your practice
Training teaches us how to support families. Eventually different questions appear: How many families can I realistically support? What does being on call cost me? How do I price my work? What happens when I cannot attend a birth? Where does support end and constant availability begin?
Who holds the people who hold the families? The Practice Lab begins with these questions. We share what we have tested, you bring what you have learned, and together we explore what sustainable practice can mean in different lives and healthcare systems.
Six weeks. A small group. One working table.
The founding AMAMA Practice Lab is a six-week live online experience for practising birth and postpartum doulas. Once a week, we meet around one virtual table. Small enough to know each other’s names and practices.
This is not primarily a lecture series. We open our actual practices, calculate, map, question, share what works — and sometimes what doesn’t.
What might come onto the table?
- 01
Sustainable practice
Capacity, energy, availability and creating a practice that supports your life.
- 02
The true cost of your work
Availability, preparation, communication, travel, administration, recovery and professional development.
- 03
Pricing
What does your practice need in order to be sustainable?
- 04
Client journey and boundaries
A thoughtful and personal experience from the first message to the final follow-up, without permanent availability.
- 05
Backup and continuity
Births overlap. People get sick. Bodies need rest. Backup is part of responsible practice.
- 06
Education and professional village
Workshops, groups, resources and genuine relationships with the professionals around you.
You leave with more than notes
During the Lab, you begin building your Sustainable Practice Map, True Cost of Service calculation, Pricing & Capacity framework, Client Journey Map, Backup framework, Boundary prompts, Professional Village Map and 90-Day Practice Plan. These are working tools for your version of sustainable practice.
Who is the Lab for?
Birth and postpartum doulas who see this work as a profession. You don’t need twenty years of experience or to have everything figured out. What matters is curiosity, reflection, willingness to talk about what isn’t working and a belief that another excellent doula is a colleague, not a competitor.
Who is holding the Lab?
Zsuzsi Suhai-Kóra, founder of AMAMA, brings birth work, entrepreneurship, operations, team building and international experience. She remains an active birth doula.
Katerina, a postpartum doula and educator working with international families in Germany, brings experience in client journeys, boundaries and turning knowledge into education. They bring different professional histories and questions. The doulas around the table bring expertise of their own.
We teach collaboration by practising it
Some areas will be led by Zsuzsi, some by Katerina and some explored together. If a birth calls one facilitator away, the other can move the conversation to an area she can genuinely hold. A sustainable practice should not depend on one person always being available. Neither should the Lab.

Not ready for the Lab?
Come for coffee first. AMAMA Coffee is an open table for doulas curious about how this work is practised beyond their own city or professional circle. One table. Different places. A profession we don’t have to practise alone.
